Sambro Island Lighthouse.

     Sambro Island Lighthouse is the oldest operational lighthouse in North America. It stands on a granite island about two nautical miles outside the entrance to the port of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

     Built of stone and sheathed in wood shingles to protect its mortar from the fierce salt air it has been a beacon to mariners for over 240 years.

     Originally fueled by fish oil the light has seen the steady march of technology through fountain lamps to today's 36" airport beacon which flashes every five seconds and is visible for 24 miles.

     Sambro island has witnessed history in abundance, military & merchant vessels have made their first or last landfall under its watchful eye from the American war of independence to world war II and beyond

     It continues to watch today as new generations of container ships, cruise ships, the worlds mightiest fighting vessels and all manner of pleasure craft still take comfort in its mighty presence.
